Here are a few frequently asked questions about our magazine. Have one that’s not on here? Please email Nikki@MiradorMagazine.com or call 360-732-1336.

Do your magazines mention dementia?

We do not mention who the magazine is designed for in our publication. That being said, we do have some stories written by people with lived experience of dementia and other professionals in the care community. Tagline appearing below some features may mention that the writer is living with dementia, or that their specialty is in a dementia-related field. You can always reach out to Nikki@MiradorMagazine.com if you have specific concerns or would like to see examples.

Can you explain your subscription series?

At this time Mirador offers a 6- or 12-month subscription series, starting with Volume 1 and continuing for six or twelve issues. Issues are mailed out on the first of the month. None of our publications have dates on them (such as August 2021), only the Volume and Title (Volume 1: Sand and Sea), so readers are always reading a “current” issue. Once your 12-month series has ended, we can let you know what new issues might be available.

Does Mirador have advertising?

No. Mirador does not have any advertising. However, we will run small banners underneath some of our contributors’ columns showing their credentials or organizations.

Is Mirador okay for children to read?

Yes. All of our content is family-friendly, positive, and encouraged to be used as a resource for intergenerational engagement.

What approximate grade level are your stories?

Mirador’s stories vary but typically are found within the Flesch-Kincaide readability score of between 60-70, or an 8-10th grade reading level.

My loved one has mid-stage dementia. Will they be able to read your magazine?

Dementia is a complicated disease — with more than 100 different diagnoses according to Alzheimer’s Disease International. There’s a saying that if you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia. Some people may retain certain abilities for long periods of time and while others find challenges in terms of speaking, mobility, or skills like reading. For some, comprehension and retention may be more challenging. Over the last several years of talking to readers and their families, we’ve found that for the most part the magazine is enjoyed in the moment, either reading the stories or enjoying the images and extrapolating conversation based on them. Having stories read out loud by care partners can also enhance both connection and comprehension. That said, we always encourage readers to try one or two magazines first. You may also order a 12-page sampler issue if you would like to try a shorter version. That is available via our website store or Email Nikki@MiradorMagazine.com for more information.

How is your magazine “dementia-inclusive?”

Please see this PDF to see how we design Mirador for this community.

Do you ship internationally?

We can ship pretty much anywhere, but the shipping charge will increase depending on location. If you are interested in having issues sent internationally, please contact Nikki@MiradorMagazine.com

I would love to submit a story. Do you have guidelines for writer submissions?

Yes. You can see our submission guidelines here. We love having many different voices in Mirador but particularly welcome writers living with dementia or other brain change.

Are there other publications available for this audience?

Not enough! But, we always like to mention: NANA’S BOOKS created by NostalgiaWorks. If fact, Mirador Magazine has teamed up with NANA’S BOOKS to form the Mindful Libraries collaborative. Visit mindfullibraries.com to learn more about our reading program for communities of care.
